When I find myself in a decorating dilemma where nothing seems to work, I rely on my collection of  books to come to my rescue. Books in varied sizes and colored spines provide an instant solution by filling up empty shelves and coffee tables.

One trend I have seen a bit of lately in interiors editorial photography and design shows  is the flipside of traditional book display which I love! By  grouping books page side out, you get a wonderful array of neutral tones (depending on the books’ age!) that helps to create texture within the same tonal range, plus an art installation of sorts! If the idea of having your well read and often used titles flipped is frustrating,  then you may want to collect an assortment of old books from your local thrift store or garage sale to use instead.

Iced coffee in mason jars? Perfect. I have been doing loads of reading lately on food styling and it always gets me excited.

I’m always drawn in by beautifully detailed and authentic movie or still life sets. As a stylist I take delight in absorbing the way a room is designed and the collections sitting on side tables, photos and paintings on walls and the style of furniture and accessories placed within a frame to help tell the story. So I do get quite excited when a trend lends itself to getting really authentic with time honored pieces. The trend which I have noticed testing the waters lately (and quite appropriate for our 40 degree heat wave!) is colonial in nature, with its wonderful imagery of travel, merchants and sense of discovery. It combines earthy tones and raw materials like rattan and linens with vintage travel wares and scientific curios for an eclectic and spontaneous ‘set up camp for the night’ kind of feel.

I reveled in the chance to create a mood board to inspire an interiors setting and explore for myself all the lovely imagery conjured up by colonial times. Humid days spent in the shade discovering new creatures, the soft lull of palm frond fans, and adventure in the jungle waiting on your doorstep.…

So much I love about this food styling. Artichokes, the light, raw background and country kitchen feel.

Hello! I hope you enjoyed your Christmas and New Year break and took time out to appreciate everything 2011 brought you.

A gift I received (or rather gifted to myself with gift money!) was the newest title from my very favorite Aussie stylist Sibella Court. ‘Nomad’ explores how you can easily create wonderful nooks and installations in your space to display your much loved travel mementos. My brother is in London as I write (Happy Bday Pants!) and soon will be heading to France for a skiing trip. Both of these had rekindled my urge to travel and explore the back streets and hidden gems in ‘my list’ cities like New York, London and Paris. This inspired me to style and shoot a couple of travel themed sets to get me dreaming(and saving!!)
